Project Brief

Last Resort provided the team a professional experience in which the design was restricted by a creative brief more specific than previous projects. This served as a learning opportunity to working with stakeholders.

Remote Work

Last Resort had been the first project I worked on remotely during the concepting phase. This stage requires strong communication within the team in order to start aligning the vision, especially with a team as large as 20 members. Prioritizing team work ethics and dynamics was one of our key takeaway from this phase.

Research

During this phase, level design had less time allocated to level concepting as the team prioritized researching and interpreting our brief. From a level design perspective, this took form through identifying principles and creating paint-overs of inspiration titles such as Left 4 Dead, Destiny, and Gears of War.

Art Style Switch

To reduce the scope of the environmental art pipeline, the artists within the team proposed a new aesthetic for the game. As this affected level design, I had drawn some conclusions from a level perspective to present to our producers.

Team Division

Last Resort's goals this phase were to have a playable demo along side pipelines for production. To achieve these goals, the team decided to split into two groups each working towards one of the goals. For this phase, I had been the only level designer assigned to creating the pipelines as the rest worked towards the demo.

Pre-Production Blueprint

Last Resort is the first project where I worked with other level designers. When creating our pipelines, I tried to ensure both consistency and creative freedom by researching the Preproduction Blueprint, creating a gym level/modular set, and working with an artist to create a procedural wall tool.
