Photo References
The goal for this map was to integrate real life photo references into the map. This involved adventuring around Breda (Netherlands) to take photos of architecture, environment, lighting, props, and anything else that could serve as inspiration for a capture the flag game mode.
Sketching
After having gathered the photo references, sketches were created to piece together the map. This was the stage where the gameplay of the map started coming together. To help further visualize the map, the paper sketches were then re-created in SketchUp.
Production
Build & Iteration
Level Building
This project had been my first time creating a level blockout using Unreal Engine's BSP Brushes. It was also the first project in which I started working towards creating a modular set. At the time I had not known just how much a modular set would help with iteration as I was unfamiliar with working within an iterative process.
Level Design Ingredients
Composition, player-flow, landmarks, leading lines and other level design ingredients had all been unknown to be until this project. Mesopolis served as a starting milestone for my aspiration of becoming a level designer.
Art Pass
Dress & Polish
Art Collaboration
I had reached out to environmental artists to turn this project into a collaborative effort as a means of understanding the art pass process. Practicing how to communicate between disciplines and align gameplay and art was something that was important to us.
COVID-19
After having iterated on the art style, this phase eventually dropped as quarantine initiated in the Netherlands.
